Facelift

No one looks forward to the day they start “showing their age.” Unfortunately, time waits for nobody, and factors like gravity, sun exposure, stress, and lifestyle can make signs of aging more pronounced.

Fortunately, if you feel self-conscious about lines, wrinkles, sagging, and other issues, a facelift may provide a long-term fix.

Dr. J. Douglas Cusick is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has extensive experience performing facelifts and other facial plastic surgery procedures. Please call (913) 661-0202 today to schedule your initial consultation. We proudly serve men and women in Leawood, Overland Park, and throughout the Kansas City area.

How Is a Facelift Done?

The first thing to understand is that your facelift procedure will be unique to you. Just as your face is one-of-a-kind, Dr. Cusick will individualize the surgery so it takes into account your singular face shape, structure, and features. The goal is to turn back time on the face you have, not significantly change the way you look.

To that end, Dr. Cusick may do the following as part of your facelift:

  • Reduce excess and sagging skin
  • Remove unwanted fat
  • Tighten muscle and underlying tissues

Where Dr. Cusick makes the incision will depend on the goals you want to achieve and where you would prefer to hide the incision. The traditional place for a facelift incision is along the hairline at the temples.

However, Dr. Cusick may be able to modify the incision location so it starts lower on the temple and follows the contour of the ear (a “mini facelift”). Alternatively, he can start at the earlobe and end behind the ear at the top of the neck (the incision location used when face lift surgery is combined with a neck lift).

Is Facelift Surgery Right for Me?

The facelift procedure can address issues such as:

  • Deep smile lines in the nasolabial folds (the section of the face stretching from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth)
  • Lines extending down from the corners of the mouth toward the chin (sometimes called marionette lines)
  • Jowling of the cheeks
  • Double chin
  • Sagging appearance resulting from excess skin and loss of facial volume

Depending on your needs and goals, Dr. Cusick may recommend additional procedures to complement the facelift, or alternative options if another treatment can achieve better results.

On the other hand, if you want to address mild lines and wrinkles of the face, Dr. Cusick may recommend non-surgical BOTOX® Cosmetic or a facial filler instead of facelift surgery.

To be a candidate for a facelift, you should be a healthy non-smoker (or capable of quitting at least two weeks before the procedure and continue not smoking for at least two weeks after). In addition, your skin needs to be elastic enough to support the lifting and tightening the facelift procedure is designed to accomplish.

Realistic expectations are key to achieving your optimal results. See examples of real patients who trusted Dr. Cusick with their facelift.

The Best Candidates for a Facelift

The best candidate for a facelift is a man or woman whose face and neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity and whose bone structure is strong and well-defined. Most patients are in their forties to sixties, but facelifts can be done successfully on people in their seventies or eighties as well.

A facelift can make you look younger and fresher, and it may enhance your self- confidence in the process. But it can’t give you a totally different look, nor can it restore the health and vitality of your youth. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon.
